Common Problems and Effective Solutions for Urban Outdoor Furniture

I'm looking for urban outdoor furniture that can survive salty air near the coast, any recommendations?

I’d steer you toward marine-grade materials rather than anything simply labeled “outdoor.” For urban coastal settings, powder-coated aluminum is my first pick for frames—it’s light, rust-resistant when the coating is intact, and easy to touch up. Pair it with 316 marine-grade stainless steel hardware and fasteners; regular 304 stainless can spot and pit in salt air. For tops, look at sealed teak, HDPE recycled plastic, or compact laminate with stainless edges. Synthetic rattan can work if it’s UV-stabilized and wrapped over an aluminum frame, not steel. Avoid mild steel, cast iron, untreated pine, and fittings described only as “stainless” without a grade. Cushions should use solution-dyed acrylic covers and quick-dry foam, and they should come inside during storms. In practice, rinse the furniture monthly, touch up powder-coat chips immediately, choose designs that drain well, and use breathable covers rather than plastic that traps moisture. If you’re buying for a shared rooftop, courtyard, or promenade, ask for coastal-grade finishes and 316 hardware in writing—that one detail makes a bigger difference than most brand names.
