Common Problems and Effective Solutions for Urban Outdoor Furniture

Do I need to treat urban outdoor furniture with sealant every year?

Short answer: not automatically. I would not make annual sealing a blind ritual for every piece of urban outdoor furniture. For solid wood furniture, especially in a city, yearly inspection is smart, but resealing often makes more sense every one to two years, or when water stops beading and the surface looks dry, faded, or rough. Urban conditions matter: pollution, acid rain, strong UV, freeze-thaw cycles, and winter road salt can wear a finish faster than in a quiet garden. The material decides a lot. Teak and other dense woods can weather naturally if you like the silver-gray look, though some people still seal them to slow moisture swings. Metal usually needs rust protection or touch-up paint, not wood sealant. Plastic, resin, and most composite furniture generally do not need sealant at all. Wicker, rattan, and woven pieces may need a suitable protector, but check the manufacturer first. Before sealing, clean the furniture thoroughly and let it dry completely; sealing over dirt or damp wood traps problems. I would use the yearly check as the real habit: look for cracks, mold, water absorption, and worn finish, then reseal only when the product instructions and the condition of the piece call for it. Over-sealing can sometimes trap moisture or create buildup, so more is not always better.
