In most urban settings, there is no single universal weight limit for outdoor chairs and benches. For ordinary café-style or sidewalk chairs, the practical limit is usually around 250–300 lb per seat. Heavy-duty or commercial-grade chairs may be rated for 400–500 lb. Benches vary more: a typical street or park bench often falls in the 400–600 lb range, while public benches built for plazas, transit stops, or high-traffic parks can be rated at 600–1,000 lb or more.
The real answer is the label or spec sheet. If a chair or bench has no visible rating, assume the lower end and do not overload it. Also remember that a bench rating is often based on evenly distributed weight, not one person dropping onto the middle. Materials matter too: powder-coated steel and cast aluminum frames tend to handle more weight, while thin tubular frames or some resin pieces may flex sooner.
For urban outdoor furniture, choose chairs with at least a 300 lb rating and benches with 600 lb+ if you expect crowds, heavy bags, or several people sitting close together. Inspect welds, fasteners, and anchors regularly, and replace damaged pieces rather than testing their limits.
