Common Problems and Effective Solutions for Urban Outdoor Furniture

How do I keep urban outdoor furniture from blowing over during storms?

The short answer is: don’t rely on weight alone. Wind doesn’t just push furniture—it gets under tables, chairs, and cushions and lifts them. In an urban setting—balconies, rooftops, courtyards, café patios—you also have to work around railings, shared walls, rental rules, and tight spaces.

Start by reducing what the wind can grab. Bring cushions, lightweight trays, and umbrellas inside before a storm. Choose heavy or weighted furniture where possible, or use furniture that nests and stacks so you can group it and move it to a sheltered corner. If you can store it, that’s always the best option.

For pieces that stay outside, lower the center of gravity. Put sandbags or water-weight bags on the base of stands, not on the seat, and strap table legs together. Use removable ground anchors or weighted bases if drilling isn’t allowed. On balconies, tie furniture to a sturdy railing or wall anchor with ratchet straps or bungee cords—but never to gas pipes, electrical conduits, or fire escapes. Check with building management before attaching anything to shared structures.

Group furniture tightly and interlock chairs under tables if possible. Add a windbreak like a solid planter or outdoor screen, but make sure it’s anchored too. For umbrellas and canopies, close them and secure the pole; an open umbrella acts like a sail. If strong winds are forecast, turn lightweight tables upside down or lay them on their side and weight them.

Finally, do a quick pre-storm check: lock casters, clear loose items, check straps for wear, and make sure drainage isn’t blocked. After the storm, inspect anchors and furniture for damage before using them. The goal isn’t to make furniture impossible to move—it’s to make it too boring for the wind to bother with.
