Common Problems and Effective Solutions for Urban Outdoor Furniture

How do I keep squirrels from chewing on my wooden urban outdoor furniture?

Honestly, squirrels are little furry rodents with ever-growing teeth, so they chew. On a balcony or rooftop, your wooden chair or table is just another thing to gnaw, mark, or use for nest material. You won’t win with one trick. You need to make the furniture less tasty, harder to reach, and less fun than the alternatives. Here’s what actually works for me in a city setting.

Start by removing the reasons they’re hanging around. If you have a bird feeder, spilled seed, compost, trash, or fallen fruit, clean it up. Squirrels follow food. If your furniture is near a tree, railing, or wall they can jump from, move it or prune branches back at least 6–8 feet. Squirrels can jump far, but making the leap awkward helps.

Next, block the chew points. They usually go for armrests, table edges, and chair legs. Wrap legs with metal flashing or hardware cloth. Squirrels hate chewing metal. You can also use plastic spiral tree guards on legs, but determined squirrels may chew through plastic over time. For edges, a strip of galvanized metal or a sacrificial piece of untreated hardwood attached to the chew spot can save the original wood. Check the barrier regularly and smooth sharp edges so no one gets hurt.

Taste deterrents help if you reapply them. Commercial squirrel repellent for wood is the easiest. Look for one labeled for outdoor furniture and follow the label. DIY mixes with cayenne pepper, garlic, or vinegar can work, but they wash off after rain and can irritate pets or kids. Test a hidden spot first. I’ve had good luck with a capsaicin-based spray on table legs, reapplied every couple of weeks. Don’t use anything that could harm wildlife or your family.

Make the furniture itself less appealing. A hard finish like polyurethane, varnish, or tung oil won’t make wood squirrel-proof, but it can make it less inviting than raw, weathered softwood. If you’re buying new urban outdoor furniture, consider harder woods like teak or ipe, or metal and composite options. If you already have soft pine, don’t panic—just combine barriers and repellents.

Sensory deterrents can help break the habit. Motion-activated sprinklers are probably the most reliable. A sudden spray startles squirrels and they usually don’t come back to that exact spot. Ultrasonic devices are hit-or-miss, especially in noisy cities. Reflective tape, wind chimes, or a radio can work for a few days, but squirrels get used to them. Change things up. Think of it as an urban squirrel deterrent system, not a single gadget.

Give them something else to chew. If you have a yard or balcony, put an untreated hardwood block, a safe squirrel chew toy, or a raw fruit tree branch away from your furniture. This isn’t a guarantee, but it can redirect some chewing. Don’t use treated lumber, and don’t feed squirrels near your seating area—it just trains them to come back.

Finally, cover the furniture when you’re not using it. A heavy canvas cover or a fitted tarp makes it harder for them to access the wood. Some squirrels will chew through plastic tarps, so choose a thick, tough cover. If the furniture is small, store cushions and removable parts inside.

My honest routine: clean up food, wrap the legs with metal flashing, spray a squirrel repellent for wood every two weeks, and set a motion sprinkler near the balcony. It’s not a one-and-done fix, but it’s enough to stop squirrels chewing furniture most of the time. Start with the easiest changes, stay consistent, and you’ll protect your wooden outdoor furniture without turning your patio into a fortress.
