URBAN OUTDOOR FURNITURE

For a fire escape reading nook, the best pieces are less "furniture makeover" and more "lightweight, foldable, and weatherproof." On a fire escape, you usually don't have much room, and you often can't block the path or turn it into a permanent room. So I'd start with a compact folding bistro chair or director's chair with a quick-dry cushion. It gives you a proper backrest, but you can fold it flat when you're not reading or when someone needs to pass. If your fire escape feels sturdy enough and your building allows sitting, a weather-resistant outdoor pouf or ottoman is great for kicking your feet up or sitting low with a book. Look for one with a removable, washable cover and a handle. For the cozy part, add a small folding side table. It holds your coffee, phone, and a book, and it doesn't take over the landing. A slim outdoor storage bench can be nice if there's actual depth, because it doubles as seating and hides a blanket, but most urban fire escapes are too narrow, so don't force it. A waterproof outdoor rug or interlocking deck tiles will soften the metal grating and make the space feel intentional. Then layer in a couple of weather-resistant cushions, a packable throw, and a battery-powered lantern or clip-on light. Avoid candles and anything with an open flame. My ideal list: folding bistro chair, outdoor pouf or ottoman, small side table, weather-resistant cushions, and a compact outdoor rug or mat. Keep everything light enough to move with one hand. Check your lease and local fire code first, and never leave furniture where it could block an escape route.
