Common Problems and Effective Solutions for Urban Outdoor Furniture

What's the best way to clean algae off of outdoor furniture?

Algae growth on outdoor furniture is a common problem caused by moisture and shade. To clean it effectively, start by choosing the right method for your furniture material. For most surfaces, a simple DIY solution works wonders. Mix one part white vinegar with one part water in a spray bottle. For tougher growth, add a tablespoon of dish soap. Spray the solution generously onto the algae-covered areas and let it sit for 15-20 minutes to break down the growth. Then, scrub the surface with a stiff-bristled brush (use a softer brush for delicate woods or wicker). Finally, rinse thoroughly with a garden hose. For very stubborn algae on durable materials like plastic, resin, or concrete, a pressure washer on a low setting can be highly effective. Always test any cleaning method on a small, inconspicuous area first. To prevent algae from returning, keep furniture dry when possible, store it covered during wet seasons, and consider applying a protective sealant for wood. Regular cleaning with a mild soap and water solution can also stop algae from taking hold.
