While it might be tempting to use plush indoor cushions on your balcony or patio furniture, this is generally a poor choice for both practicality and longevity. Indoor cushions are not designed to withstand the harsh elements of an outdoor environment. They lack the critical protective materials and treatments that define purpose-built outdoor cushions.
The primary issue is moisture. Regular indoor cushions will absorb rain and morning dew, leading to several problems. The filling, often made of materials like cotton or down, will become saturated and take a very long time to dry completely. This trapped moisture creates a perfect breeding ground for mold and mildew, which will cause unpleasant odors and permanent stains. Furthermore, a damp cushion can ultimately rot the fabric and even promote rust on metal furniture frames underneath.
Sun exposure is another major concern. The fabrics used for indoor decor will quickly fade and deteriorate under direct ultraviolet (UV) rays. The colors will become washed out, and the material itself may turn brittle and tear easily. Indoor cushions are also more susceptible to damage from pollen, dirt, and curious pests.
Outdoor cushions, in contrast, are engineered with solution-dyed acrylic fabrics that are UV-resistant, water-repellent, and mold-resistant. Their fill is typically quick-drying foam. For a truly urban-outdoor lifestyle, investing in proper outdoor cushions is essential. They will maintain their appearance, stay cleaner, and last for seasons, ultimately providing better comfort and value. If you must use an indoor cushion temporarily, be absolutely sure to bring it inside immediately after use and whenever there is a threat of rain.
