Mildew on your urban outdoor furniture cushions is a common but fixable problem. The key is to act quickly to prevent permanent damage. First, take the cushions outside and brush off any loose mildew spores. For a simple and effective cleaning solution, mix equal parts white vinegar and water in a spray bottle. For tougher mildew, a solution of one cup of bleach to a gallon of water can be used, but test it on a small, hidden area first for colorfastness. Spray the solution generously onto the mildewed areas and let it sit for 10-15 minutes to penetrate. Then, scrub the surface with a soft-bristled brush. Rinse the cushions thoroughly with a garden hose to remove all cleaning residue. The most crucial step is to let the cushions dry completely in direct sunlight, as the sun's UV rays help kill remaining mildew spores. To prevent future mildew growth, store cushions in a dry, well-ventilated area when not in use, especially during humid or rainy weather. Applying a fabric protector spray designed for outdoor use can also create a water-resistant barrier. Regularly wiping down your cushions after rain or dew will significantly reduce the chance of mildew returning.
