URBAN OUTDOOR FURNITURE

The honest answer is that there is no single weight capacity for “urban outdoor furniture.” A public bench and a café table are built for different loads, and a cheap residential-style bench is not the same as a commercial-grade street bench. That said, there are useful ballpark ranges. A typical commercial public bench is often engineered for roughly 600–1,000 lb (270–450 kg) total distributed load, with many individual seat ratings around 250–400 lb (115–180 kg). Heavy concrete or steel benches can be much higher—or they may not have a simple user rating at all because they are effectively anchored structures. Park picnic tables commonly fall around 500–800 lb (225–360 kg) total, while heavier commercial models may be rated for 1,000 lb (450 kg) or more. Small outdoor café or bistro tables might handle around 100–200 lb (45–90 kg) of evenly placed top load, while larger commercial tables can be higher. These are broad field ranges, not a guarantee. The real capacity depends on frame design, material thickness, welds, fasteners, slat connections, anchoring, the substrate, and how the load is applied. A bench rated for four people evenly seated is not the same as a bench taking a dynamic load from someone jumping onto it. Tables are usually rated for evenly distributed top load, not for standing or sitting on the tabletop. For public spaces, I would always ask the manufacturer for a documented load rating and installation instructions. Look for commercial-grade products with warranty and test information, and check anchors, rust, cracks, and loose bolts as part of routine maintenance. If no rating is published, do not assume it is safe for heavy public use just because it looks sturdy.
