URBAN OUTDOOR FURNITURE

There isn’t one simple number, because the lifespan of powder-coated urban outdoor furniture depends on the metal underneath, the quality of the powder coating, how well the surface was prepared, and where the furniture sits. In everyday city conditions, I’d usually expect the powder coating itself to last around 5 to 10 years before you start seeing chalky fading, small chips, or dulling. With a high-quality architectural powder coat and good pretreatment, especially on aluminum or galvanized steel, you can often get closer to 10 to 15 years before a refresh is needed. The furniture frame itself can last much longer, often 15 to 20 years or more, provided water doesn’t get into bare steel and rust starts spreading under the coating. In harsh settings, such as coastal areas with salt spray, heavy pollution, or constant sun exposure, that timeline can shrink. A poorly prepared steel bench might show rust at chips or welded joints within 3 to 5 years, while a well-made aluminum bench in a mild climate can keep looking good for well over a decade. Maintenance matters more than many people expect. Regular cleaning with mild soap and water removes abrasive grit and pollution that dull the finish, and touching up small chips early stops corrosion from creeping underneath. So for planning purposes, I’d treat powder-coated urban outdoor furniture as a 5 to 10 year coating system and a 10 to 15+ year piece of street furniture, with inspection and simple care being the things that decide whether it lands at the lower or upper end.
