Short answer: there isn’t one universal fire rating for urban outdoor furniture fabrics. It depends on the fabric, the furniture construction, how the piece is used, and the local code or fire marshal’s requirements. If someone tells you an outdoor fabric is “fire-rated,” the useful follow-up is: rated to what standard, and can I see the current test report?
In commercial and public urban settings—café seating, park benches, rooftop lounges, transit plazas, and mixed-use courtyards—specifiers often look for upholstery fabrics that meet California TB 117-2013, NFPA 260/UFAC Class 1, and sometimes ASTM E84 Class A or B where the fabric or composite is treated as an interior finish. For vertical applications such as curtains or drapery, NFPA 701 may also come into play. Those standards are not interchangeable, so “Class A” or “Class 1” only means something when you name the test behind it.
Outdoor performance and fire performance are also separate issues. A fabric can be excellent at resisting UV fading, mold, mildew, water, and abrasion and still not carry the fire certification your project requires. Solution-dyed acrylics and other commercial outdoor fabrics may pass common upholstery flammability tests, but the exact color, backing, coating, and finish can affect results. That’s why I would not rely on a generic marketing claim or an old data sheet.
For an urban outdoor furniture project, ask the fabric supplier for the latest certification for the exact style and color, confirm that the furniture manufacturer accepts it, and check with the local authority having jurisdiction before you specify. If the installation is high-traffic, enclosed, or subject to stricter public-building codes, require a commercial-grade fabric with documented test results. The safe answer is not a single number—it’s a verified standard that matches your project and location.
