URBAN OUTDOOR FURNITURE

I’d start by assuming the furniture will be wet, because in an urban setting rain, cleaning, and condensation are all normal. Look for surfaces that are deliberately textured rather than glossy: slatted timber or high-density polyethylene with a brushed grain, perforated or ribbed powder-coated metal, and brushed or broom-finished concrete are usually better choices than polished stone, smooth plastic, glazed tile, or mirror-like metal. Texture matters, but so does profile. A seat that holds a puddle will be slippery no matter what the material is, so check for drainage gaps, weep holes, sloped seat pans, and stand-offs that let water run away. Avoid deep tray-like seats, tight joints that trap water, and flat tabletops with raised edges. Ask the supplier for wet slip-resistance test data—pendulum test results or relevant R/P ratings—and, if you can, pour water on a sample and test it with the shoes people will actually wear. Pay attention to the edges and transitions too: rounded edges, visible drainage channels, and removable or quick-dry cushions reduce risk. Cushions should use drainage-friendly foam and fabric, or be omitted in exposed areas. Placement matters as much as product choice: keep furniture out of low spots, away from drip lines, and in areas with good airflow so algae and moss do not build up. Finally, plan a simple maintenance routine—clear leaves, clean off algae, and avoid polishes or coatings that fill the texture. If it looks shiny and feels smooth when dry, it will probably be worse when wet.
