The best way is to start dry, then clean gently and dry everything thoroughly. Urban outdoor furniture that has sat outside all winter usually has a mix of grit, soot, pollen, bird droppings, and damp dirt in the joints, so don’t begin by soaking it. First, brush off loose debris with a soft dry brush or vacuum with a brush attachment. Check the material before you choose a cleaner: powder-coated metal, wood, wicker, plastic, and fabric cushions all need slightly different care.
For most hard surfaces, a mild soap-and-water solution is enough. Use a soft cloth or sponge, work into the crevices, and avoid harsh bleach or abrasive pads unless the manufacturer says otherwise. For mold or mildew, use a suitable outdoor cleaner or a diluted vinegar solution, test it on a hidden spot, and rinse well. If you see rust on metal, remove light rust with a gentle pad, dry the area, and touch up paint if needed.
Rinse with clean water and dry immediately with a towel or cloth. Don’t use a high-pressure washer on wood, wicker, or painted metal because it can force water into joints and strip finishes. For cushions, check the care label, spot-clean with mild soap, rinse carefully, and let them dry fully in the sun before putting them back. Once everything is clean and completely dry, apply the appropriate protective cover, oil, or sealer if the material calls for it. That step keeps urban grime from settling back in and makes next season’s cleanup much easier.
