Think about the top surface. A lipped or tray-style edge keeps a drink from sliding off, and a slightly recessed center can hold a pot without wobbling. For plant-friendly picks, choose a table with a solid or slatted top that drains. If the top is solid, use a saucer under the pot. If you want to keep things simple, a two-tier table gives you separate zones: top for drinks, bottom for a small fern, succulent, or herbs like mint or basil. That separation also protects your drink from soil and water spills.
If your space is really tight, consider a nesting set. Two or three small tables stack or tuck under each other when not in use, and you can pull one out for guests. A folding side table is another option, though it may feel less stable for a plant. Look for locking legs if you go that route.
Finally, match the table to your existing furniture. A black metal frame pairs well with modern chairs, while natural wood blends with boho or Scandinavian looks. Keep the height within an inch or two of your chair seat so reaching for your drink feels natural.
