When urban outdoor furniture is exposed to full sun all day, the material must resist UV degradation, heat buildup, fading, cracking, and moisture damage. The best overall choice for most cities is high-density polyethylene (HDPE) – commonly known as poly lumber or recycled plastic lumber.
Why HDPE wins in full sun:
- UV stability: Quality HDPE is manufactured with UV inhibitors that prevent fading, chalking, and brittleness. It can sit in direct sunlight for years without losing color or structural integrity.
- Heat resistance: HDPE does not become dangerously hot like metal or dark-colored concrete. It stays comfortable enough for seating even on hot afternoons.
- Moisture and rot proof: Unlike wood, HDPE never rots, splinters, or warps. Rain or humidity does not affect it.
- Low maintenance: No painting, sealing, or staining. A simple soap-and-water wash restores it.
- Durability: It resists cracking, peeling, and insect damage. Many HDPE furniture pieces come with 20-year warranties.
Runner-up materials:
- Teak or robinia (black locust): Natural woods with high oil content resist UV and moisture well, but they require annual oiling and can fade to gray without care.
- Powder-coated aluminum: Lightweight, rust-proof, and good for frames, but bare metal can get very hot in full sun. Dark colors absorb heat.
- Fiberglass-reinforced concrete: Extremely durable and heat-tolerant, but heavy, expensive, and can crack if not sealed.
- Recycled plastic composite (wood-plastic composite): Good UV resistance, but lower-quality versions may fade or crack over time.
Materials to avoid in full sun:
