Resin outdoor furniture, often made from high-density polyethylene (HDPE) or similar polymers, is highly resistant to moisture, rot, and insects. It does not rust, crack, or splinter like wood, and it handles rain, humidity, and temperature swings well. Many modern resin pieces are also UV-stabilized, which helps prevent fading and brittleness from sun exposure. However, extreme cold can make some lower-quality resins brittle, and heavy impact may cause cracking over time.
Aluminum furniture, on the other hand, is prized for its strength-to-weight ratio. It is naturally rust-resistant because of its oxide layer, and it does not absorb water. Powder-coated aluminum offers even better protection against scratches, corrosion, and UV damage. Aluminum can withstand heavy use and extreme weather better than most resins, and it will not become brittle in cold temperatures. That said, lower-grade aluminum can dent under strong impact, and scratches that penetrate the coating may lead to pitting over time.
In terms of maintenance, resin is extremely low-maintenance—usually just soap and water. Aluminum also requires minimal care, but painted or powder-coated finishes may need occasional touch-ups to prevent corrosion in coastal or highly polluted urban areas.
Overall, aluminum generally offers superior long-term durability, especially in harsh urban environments with heavy use, extreme weather, and pollution. Resin is more affordable and still very durable for residential or light commercial use, but it may not match aluminum's lifespan under intense conditions. For the most demanding urban settings, aluminum is often the more durable choice, while resin remains a practical, cost-effective alternative for milder climates and moderate use.
