Add quick-drying, closed-cell foam cushions covered in marine-grade or solution-dyed acrylic fabric—these fabrics resist mold and do not feel damp even after prolonged humidity.
Avoid materials like wrought iron, untreated steel, or solid teak without sealant, as they will become cold and rust or mildew quickly. Also, skip natural cotton cushions and untreated bamboo, which trap moisture.
For a truly maintenance-free option, consider high-density polyethylene (HDPE) plastic lumber—it mimics wood but is completely waterproof, freeze-resistant, and easy to wipe clean. It never rots, feels neutral in temperature, and is perfect for small urban balconies.
Finally, always add a protective cover when not in use, even for these materials. And consider a simple drainage mat under furniture to keep the balcony floor from trapping moisture.
