Upright benches, with their high seat and rigid posture, promote vigilance, quick exits, and a clear public face; they are preferred near crosswalks, commercial storefronts, and security-sensitive zones. For unhoused individuals, however, deep-seated furniture with horizontal surfaces becomes overnight bedding, quickly triggering hostile architecture modifications—spikes, armrests, or sloped seats. Thus, comfort is politicized: deep seats may be comfortable for the rested, but they are often deliberately made uncomfortable for the weary.

Ultimately, the superior comfort depends on intended duration and body support. For 5-minute stops, upright designs are functionally superior—easier to stand up from, more legible for social cues. For 30-minute plus contemplative rest, deep-seated furniture wins decisively: it supports passive relaxation, reduces spinal load by up to 30% (measured via pressure mapping), and aligns with the natural kyphotic-lordotic curve when a headrest is added. The best urban design is hybrid: a park may feature both a deep-seated oak crescent for sunset viewers and a series of upright granite stools with slight forward tilt for quick coffee breaks.
