Caring for rattan urban outdoor furniture requires a thoughtful approach, as both natural and synthetic rattan have different needs. For synthetic rattan—common in modern outdoor settings—you can use mild soapy water (a few drops of dish soap mixed with warm water) and a soft cloth or brush to gently remove dust, pollen, and urban grime. Avoid harsh chemicals like bleach, ammonia, or abrasive cleaners, as they can degrade the resin coating. For natural rattan, which is more delicate and porous, stick to a barely damp cloth with mild soap; never soak the fibers, as excess moisture can cause warping or mold. A specialized rattan cleaner from brands like Guardsman or a simple vinegar-water solution (1 part white vinegar to 4 parts water) can also work well for stubborn spots, but always test on a hidden area first. After cleaning, dry the furniture thoroughly with a soft towel to prevent water marks. For UVA/UV protection, consider a clear protective spray designed for wicker or rattan every six months. Avoid using oil-based or silicone-based polishes, as they attract dust in urban environments. Regular dusting with a microfiber cloth and prompt spot cleaning after spills will keep your rattan pieces looking fresh without needing heavy-duty products.
