In the scorching summer heat, the materials of urban outdoor furniture—benches, chairs, tables—can dramatically affect how comfortable or unpleasant they feel to the touch. Understanding these differences helps city planners, designers, and users make informed choices.

First, metal surfaces, especially steel and aluminum, absorb heat quickly. Under direct sunlight, a metal bench can become scalding hot—often exceeding 50°C (122°F) within minutes. Touching it feels like pressing your hand against a hot stove, making it uncomfortable for sitting unless shaded. Aluminum is slightly better than steel due to its higher reflectivity, but still remains hot.

Wood, in contrast, is far more forgiving. Materials like teak, eucalyptus, or pressure-treated pine are natural insulators. They do not conduct heat as effectively as metal, so they stay relatively cool to the touch, even on blazing afternoons. A wooden bench feels warm—like sun-heated skin—but rarely burns. The downside is that dark-colored wood can absorb more heat than light wood, but overall, wood remains a comfortable choice.

Plastic and synthetic materials (polypropylene, recycled plastics) vary widely. Dark plastic absorbs heat similarly to metal, becoming uncomfortably hot. Light-colored or textured plastic, however, remains cooler because it reflects sunlight. Many modern outdoor furniture pieces use perforated or slatted designs that allow air circulation, reducing surface temperature. Touching them feels warm but not painful.

Natural stone, such as granite or concrete, behaves like metal: it heats up significantly under the sun. Stone surfaces can become very hot to the touch, especially when dark-colored. However, stone's thermal mass means it holds heat longer, so even after sunset, it may remain warm. This can be pleasant for cool evenings but uncomfortable during peak heat.

Finally, composite materials (wood-plastic composites) try to balance aesthetics and comfort. They often feel similar to wood but can get hotter if the plastic content is high. Good-quality composites stay warm but not scalding.

In summary, for hot weather urban settings, wood and light-colored plastic offer the most pleasant tactile experience. Metal and stone should be avoided unless shaded, while composite materials can be a middle-ground solution. City planners should consider not just durability but also the tactile reality of furniture under a hot sun—where the difference between "warm" and "burning" can make or break a public space.
