Living in an urban high-rise or exposed terrace comes with stunning views, but also the constant challenge of gusty winds. Without proper precautions, your carefully chosen outdoor furniture can become a hazard or get damaged. Here are the most effective strategies to keep your furniture secure.
1. Choose Weighted and Heavy Pieces
The simplest defense is gravity. Look for furniture made from solid teak, wrought iron, or heavy-duty aluminum with a stone or concrete base. Avoid lightweight plastic or hollow frames. For chairs and tables, add removable sandbags or water-fillable weights that you can use only on windy days.
2. Use Furniture-Specific Anchoring Straps
Wind-rated straps or tethers are designed to attach furniture to your terrace railing, wall, or floor. These are often made of UV-resistant polypropylene with stainless steel clips. Install eye bolts on a concrete deck or railing posts, then hook the straps to them. This is especially effective for sofas, lounge chairs, and side tables.
3. Invest in Wind-Resistant Umbrellas and Shades
A standard patio umbrella can easily become a parachute. Opt for a cantilever umbrella with a heavy concrete cross base (at least 50 lbs), or a permanently installed retractable awning. If you must use a tilt umbrella, remove the canopy during high wind forecasts and bring it indoors.
4. Create a Windbreak
Strategically place planters with tall, dense shrubs (like bamboo or boxwood) or install a semi-permanent glass or acrylic wind screen on the windward side of your terrace. A sturdy outdoor screen not only blocks gusts but also shields furniture from wind pressure.
5. Adopt a Daily Wind Routine
On especially exposed terraces, make it a habit to stack lightweight chairs together on their sides, or place them on a low table. Remove cushions and pillows, storing them in a waterproof deck box. Use furniture covers with a drawstring hem that can be cinched tight – look for covers with grommets for optional bungee cords to tie down.
6. Use Non-Slip Pads and Grippers
For tables and chairs with legs, apply rubber or silicone non-slip pads designed for outdoor use. While these won’t stop a strong gust, they prevent furniture from sliding on smooth tiles, which often precedes a tip-over.
By combining heavy bases, physical anchoring, and daily habits (like removing cushions and stacking chairs), you can transform your exposed terrace into a safe, wind-resistant outdoor retreat. Always check local weather forecasts and pre-emptively secure anything light before a storm hits.
