Common Problems and Effective Solutions for Urban Outdoor Furniture

What’s the difference between the different grades of aluminum used in urban outdoor furniture?

When selecting aluminum for urban outdoor furniture—such as benches, bollards, trash receptacles, and picnic tables—understanding the differences between aluminum grades is critical for durability, aesthetics, and cost. The two most common alloys used are 6061 and 6063, each with distinct properties tailored to specific applications.

Strength and Weldability

6061 aluminum is a structural alloy known for its high strength-to-weight ratio and excellent weldability. It is often used for framework and load-bearing components where rigidity is essential, such as heavy-duty benches or bike racks. In contrast, 6063 aluminum, often called "architectural grade," has slightly lower tensile strength but superior formability and smooth surface finish. This makes it ideal for extruded shapes like handrails, decorative grilles, and curved seating.

Corrosion Resistance

Both 6061 and 6063 offer good corrosion resistance thanks to a natural oxide layer. However, 6063’s finer grain structure allows for a more uniform anodized finish, which is preferred in coastal or high-humidity urban environments where extra protection against salt spray is needed. 6061 can still be anodized or powder-coated but may require thicker coatings to match 6063’s consistency.

Aesthetic and Machining

6063 can be extruded into complex profiles with sharp corners and intricate details, perfect for modern furniture designs. 6061 is more often machined or welded into simpler shapes. For furniture that requires bending or curving, 6063 outperforms 6061 due to its higher ductility.

Cost and Availability

6061 is generally less expensive and widely stocked, while 6063 costs slightly more due to its specialized extrusion process. For high-volume urban projects requiring custom shapes, 6063’s ease of fabrication often offsets the material cost.

Other Grades Considered

Less common grades like 5052 (excellent for marine environments) or 6060 (European standard similar to 6063) may appear in specialty furniture, but 6061 and 6063 dominate the North American urban landscape.

In summary, choose 6061 for strength-critical, structural furniture, and 6063 when appearance, smooth finish, and corrosion-resistant extrusions are top priorities. For general urban outdoor furniture where both performance and aesthetics matter, 6063 remains the preferred choice among designers and municipalities.
