Urban outdoor furniture is designed for durability and style, but the question of whether it can withstand rain depends heavily on the materials used. Most high-quality urban outdoor sets feature frames made from powder-coated aluminum, stainless steel, or synthetic rattan—all of which are inherently water-resistant and can be left out in light rain without issue. However, the cushions are a different story.
If the cushions are labeled as “water-resistant” rather than “waterproof,” they can handle brief showers but will eventually absorb moisture if left exposed for hours. Water-resistant cushions often have a quick-dry foam core and a protective fabric coating, but they are not designed for constant downpours. For optimal longevity, we recommend bringing cushions indoors during heavy or prolonged rain, or storing them in a waterproof deck box. Some premium urban furniture lines offer fully waterproof cushions with sealed seams and breathable backing that can stay out in most weather conditions, but even these benefit from occasional drying in direct sunlight to prevent mildew.
To determine if your particular pieces can be left in the rain, check the manufacturer’s care label. As a general rule: frames can stay out, but cushions should be brought in when not in use for extended periods, especially during rainy seasons. Regularly cleaning the fabric with a mild soap solution and allowing it to fully dry will also prevent mold growth and extend the life of your urban outdoor furniture. So, while it is possible to leave the cushions out in a light drizzle, for long-term care, it’s safest to store them when the forecast calls for rain.
