Urban outdoor furniture is often exposed to dust, bird droppings, and pollution, so keeping it clean is essential. But can you use a pressure washer? The short answer is: it depends on the material and the pressure setting.
For metal or sturdy plastic furniture, a pressure washer with a wide nozzle (40 degrees or more) and low pressure (under 1,200 PSI) is generally safe, especially if you keep the nozzle at least 12 inches away. However, for painted, powder-coated, or wooden surfaces, a pressure washer can strip paint, gouge wood, or push water into cracks, causing long-term damage.
If you’re unsure, start with the gentlest method: use a soft brush with mild soap and water. If you do choose a pressure washer, test a hidden area first. Avoid using high-pressure rotating tips, and never aim directly at joints or sealants.
In short, while a pressure washer is effective for tough grime on heavy-duty urban furniture, it’s often too harsh for delicate finishes. For routine maintenance, a garden hose with a spray nozzle and a soft cloth is just as effective and far safer.
