If you have pigeons roosting on your roof, their droppings can quickly accumulate on your outdoor furniture, posing both a hygiene issue and a risk of surface damage. The acidity in bird droppings can etch wood, stain fabric, and corrode metal finishes if left untreated. However, with the right approach, you can clean them effectively without harming your furniture.
Start by wearing gloves and a mask to protect yourself from bacteria. For non-porous surfaces like metal or plastic, gently soften the droppings with a spray of lukewarm water—avoid high pressure initially, as it can spread the residue. Mix a solution of mild dish soap and water, or use a 50/50 blend of white vinegar and water. Apply it with a soft sponge or microfiber cloth, lightly scrubbing in circular motions. Rinse thoroughly with a hose and dry with a clean cloth to prevent water spots.
For wooden furniture, avoid harsh chemicals like bleach or abrasive scrubbers. Instead, use a paste of baking soda and water—let it sit for a few minutes to break down the droppings, then wipe away gently. For cushions or fabric, pre-treat with a solution of enzyme-based cleaner (found in pet stain removers) diluted according to instructions, then hand-wash or machine-wash on a gentle cycle. Always test any cleaner on a hidden area first.
After cleaning, apply a protective sealant to wood or wax to metal surfaces to create a barrier against future stains. To discourage pigeons from returning, consider using non-toxic repellents like reflective tape or bird spikes on your roof edge. Regular weekly cleaning will keep your outdoor space inviting and damage-free.
