These organic growths not only look unsightly but can also weaken materials and pose health risks. The best way to clean them depends on the furniture material, but a universal, effective method combines gentle scrubbing with a suitable cleaning solution.
For most metal, plastic, or synthetic wicker furniture, start by mixing a solution of one cup of oxygen bleach (like OxiClean) per gallon of warm water. Oxygen bleach is non-toxic to plants and gentler than chlorine bleach, making it ideal for urban environments where runoff might affect nearby greenery. Apply the solution with a soft-bristle brush or sponge, scrub gently, and let it sit for 10-15 minutes to break down the mildew and algae.
