The constant moisture in the air—combined with rain, morning dew, and lack of direct sunlight between tall buildings—creates a perfect breeding ground for mildew and that musty smell. But with a few smart strategies, you can keep your cushions fresh and comfortable all season long.
First, choose the right fabric from the start. Look for quick-dry, water-resistant materials like solution-dyed acrylic (e.g., Sunbrella) or polyester with a waterproof backing. These fabrics repel moisture and resist mold growth better than cotton or untreated blends.
Second, improve airflow around your cushions. After a rain shower or even on dewy mornings, stand cushions on their edges or prop them up at an angle so air can circulate underneath. Avoid leaving them flat on solid surfaces. If possible, bring cushions indoors overnight or during extended rainy periods.
Third, invest in waterproof storage solutions. Use breathable, waterproof cushion covers when cushions are not in use. For maximum protection, store cushions in a ventilated deck box or a sealed plastic bin with silica gel packets or a dehumidifier bucket inside.
Fourth, establish a regular cleaning and drying routine. Once a week, wipe cushions with a mild soap-and-water solution to remove surface dirt (which holds moisture). Dry thoroughly in a breezy spot or with a fan. For musty cushions, spray a 50/50 mix of white vinegar and water, let it sit for 10 minutes, then rinse and dry in sunlight—the vinegar kills mold spores naturally.
Finally, use moisture absorbers and anti-mold products. Place reusable silica gel packs or moisture-absorbing crystals under cushions. You can also apply a fabric-safe anti-mold spray (available at outdoor retailers) every few months to create a protective barrier.
