Common Problems and Effective Solutions for Urban Outdoor Furniture

I have a north-facing patio that gets little sun; what material won't get mossy on urban outdoor furniture?

If you have a north-facing patio that gets little sun in the urban jungle, you are likely facing a persistent challenge: moss growth on your outdoor furniture. Moss thrives in damp, low-light conditions, which are the typical reality for such spaces. To keep your furniture clean and low-maintenance, the key is selecting materials that naturally resist moisture absorption and fungal growth. Here are the best materials for your north-facing sanctuary.

First and foremost, teak wood is an excellent choice. Rich in natural oils like teak oil, teak is highly resistant to rot, mold, and moss. When left to weather, it develops a silver-gray patina that is beautiful and requires minimal upkeep—just an occasional rinse to remove surface dirt. Unlike cheaper woods, teak's dense grain prevents moisture from penetrating deeply, starving moss of a foothold.

Second, powder-coated aluminum is virtually impervious to moss. Aluminum is non-porous and will not absorb water. The powder coating adds an extra protective layer that is easy to wipe clean. It is lightweight, rust-proof, and often available in sleek modern designs perfect for urban settings. Moss simply cannot attach to such a smooth, dry surface.

Another top candidate is synthetic wicker (resin wicker), made from HDPE or PE plastic resins. Unlike natural wicker, which can trap moisture in its woven gaps, synthetic wicker is weatherproof and resistant to moisture. Its woven structure allows rain to drain through immediately, and the material itself is UV-stabilized and mold-resistant. Pair it with a powder-coated aluminum frame for lasting durability.

Avoid at all costs uncoated metal like wrought iron or cast iron (unless sealed with a marine-grade finish) and natural wood like pine or cedar, which can absorb moisture and develop green moss patches quickly. Also steer clear of fabric cushions without quick-dry foam or mold-resistant covers.

Final tip: Since your patio lacks direct sun, practice simple habits to extend furniture life. Use furniture covers made from breathable, waterproof fabric (e.g., polyester with a waterproof backing) when not in use. Place a small furniture fan or dehumidifier on very damp days if possible. And once a month, spray the furniture with a mild vinegar-water solution to discourage any early moss spores. With teak, aluminum, or synthetic wicker, your north-facing patio can remain stylish and moss-free for years.
