That said, HPL is not completely immune to damage. Sharp objects like diamond-tipped engraving tools or repeated dragging of unglazed ceramic pots can leave permanent marks. But for everyday urban use—keys, backpacks, shoes, or even skateboard rails—the material performs admirably.
For maximum longevity, choose HPL with a textured rather than glossy finish. The slight micro-roughness helps scatter light, making minor scratches invisible, and improves grip in wet conditions. Cleaning should be done with a soft cloth and mild soap; abrasive cleaners can dull the surface over decades rather than years.
In summary, for urban outdoor furniture that must resist the daily grind of city life, HPL offers one of the best scratch-resistance-to-weight ratios available. It won’t bead blast like stainless steel or dent like wood, but it will outlast painted surfaces by a margin of 3:1 or more—making it the smart choice for designers who value both aesthetics and endurance.
