To preserve the rich, golden-brown hue of your teak urban outdoor furniture, regular cleaning and oiling are essential. Start by cleaning the furniture thoroughly. Use a soft brush and a mild solution of teak cleaner or warm water with a small amount of mild, soap-free detergent. Scrub gently along the wood grain to remove dirt, mildew, and grayish surface residue. Rinse completely with clean water and allow the wood to dry fully for at least 24-48 hours in sunny, dry weather. The wood must be completely dry before the next step. Once dry, apply a high-quality teak oil or sealer specifically designed for outdoor use. Using a clean cloth or brush, apply a thin, even coat along the direction of the wood grain. Avoid over-application, as excess oil can create a sticky film. Allow the first coat to penetrate for the time recommended by the manufacturer, typically 15-30 minutes, then wipe off any excess oil that hasn't been absorbed. For optimal color protection, a second coat may be applied after several hours. It's important to note that oiling is primarily for color retention; it is not necessary for the wood's structural integrity. Un-oiled teak will naturally weather to a silvery-gray patina, which is also a protective state. To maintain the golden color, plan to re-oil your furniture once or twice a year, or whenever the color begins to fade. For furniture constantly exposed to harsh sun and rain, more frequent applications may be needed. Regular dusting and immediate cleaning of spills will also extend the time between oiling sessions.
