Common Problems and Effective Solutions for Urban Outdoor Furniture

How durable is rattan urban outdoor furniture compared to aluminum?

When selecting furniture for patios, balconies, or gardens, durability is a top concern. Two popular materials—rattan (typically synthetic) and aluminum—are often compared. Here’s how their durability stacks up.

Modern synthetic rattan, made from polyethylene (PE) or resin wicker, is highly durable for outdoor use. It is UV-resistant, preventing fading, and waterproof, resisting rot and mildew. The material is woven over a sturdy aluminum or steel frame, offering good structural integrity. However, extreme temperature fluctuations can sometimes make the strands brittle over many years, and sharp objects may cause snags.

Powder-coated aluminum furniture is exceptionally robust. Aluminum itself does not rust, and the powder coating provides a strong barrier against corrosion, chipping, and fading. It can withstand heavy winds, weight, and harsh sun without warping or degrading. Its primary vulnerability is damage to the coating; if deeply scratched, the underlying metal may become susceptible to corrosion over time.

For pure longevity in extreme climates, aluminum often has an edge, requiring almost no maintenance. High-quality synthetic rattan, while also long-lasting, may benefit from covers in harsh winters. Ultimately, both are excellent choices; your decision may hinge more on desired aesthetic, comfort, and budget, as both materials can provide many years of service with proper care.
