Common Problems and Effective Solutions for Urban Outdoor Furniture

How do I keep birds from perching on and soiling my new urban outdoor furniture?

Your new urban outdoor furniture is an investment in comfort and style, but it can quickly become a target for perching and pooping birds. Fortunately, you can protect your furniture with a range of effective and humane deterrent strategies.

Physical barriers are one of the most reliable long-term solutions. Installing bird spikes on railings and flat surfaces prevents birds from landing comfortably. These are not harmful but create an unstable surface. For larger areas like a pergola or balcony, transparent bird netting creates an almost invisible shield. For easy cleanup, consider using protective, fitted furniture covers when the furniture is not in use.

Birds are also startled by unexpected movement and reflections. Hanging reflective objects like old CDs, special reflective tape, or wind chimes near your furniture can scare them away. Visual scare devices, such as fake predatory birds like owls or hawks, can be effective, but it's crucial to move them regularly so birds don't become accustomed to them.

For a more high-tech approach, ultrasonic repellent devices emit high-frequency sounds that are unpleasant to birds but inaudible to most humans. Similarly, motion-activated sprinklers surprise birds with a sudden burst of water, conditioning them to avoid the area.

You can also use scents and tastes they dislike. Applying a non-toxic bird repellent gel on common perching spots creates a sticky sensation birds hate. Sprays made from natural ingredients like peppermint oil, vinegar, or chili pepper can also be effective, though they need to be reapplied after rain.

Finally, make the entire area less attractive. Keep it clean of any food crumbs or standing water that might attract them. Prune nearby trees or branches to eliminate convenient lookout points and easy access to your furniture.

By combining a couple of these methods, you can successfully discourage birds and keep your urban outdoor space clean, comfortable, and beautiful. Consistency is key to teaching our feathered friends to perch elsewhere.
