Common Problems and Effective Solutions for Urban Outdoor Furniture

How do I remove rust from my outdoor furniture without damaging the finish?

Removing rust from your outdoor furniture doesn't require harsh chemicals that can strip the finish. With a few household items and gentle techniques, you can restore your pieces safely. First, mix equal parts white vinegar and water in a spray bottle. Generously spray the rusty areas and let it sit for 15-30 minutes. The acetic acid in vinegar dissolves rust gently. For tougher rust, make a paste with baking soda and water, apply it thickly, and let it sit for up to an hour. After letting your chosen solution work, use a soft-bristled brush, like an old toothbrush or nylon scrubber, to gently scrub the rust away. Avoid steel wool or wire brushes on finished surfaces, as they can cause scratches. Rinse thoroughly with clean water and dry completely with a soft cloth. Finally, apply a protective wax or a fresh coat of appropriate outdoor sealant to the cleaned area to prevent future rust. Regular cleaning and keeping furniture dry under cover are the best long-term defenses against rust.
