Common Problems and Effective Solutions for Urban Outdoor Furniture

How do I get that musty smell out of outdoor furniture cushions that were stored all winter?

That damp, musty smell on your outdoor cushions after a long winter in storage is a common problem, but it's one you can solve with some simple steps. The odor is typically caused by mildew or mold growth due to moisture trapped during storage. Here is a practical guide to banishing the smell and restoring your cushions.

First, take the cushions outside on a dry, sunny day. Brush off any loose dirt or debris. For removable covers, check the care labels and machine wash them if possible, using a gentle detergent. Adding half a cup of white vinegar or baking soda to the wash cycle can help neutralize odors.

For non-removable cushions or for an extra deep clean, create a cleaning solution. Mix one part white vinegar with one part warm water, or make a paste from baking soda and water. Vinegar is a natural deodorizer and mild disinfectant, while baking soda absorbs odors. Test any solution on a small, inconspicuous area first.

Using a soft brush or cloth, scrub the solution over the entire surface of the cushion. Pay special attention to seams and folds where mildew thrives. Let the solution sit for 15-30 minutes to penetrate.

Rinse thoroughly with a hose or clean cloth and cool water. It's crucial to remove all cleaning residue. Then, squeeze out as much water as possible without twisting or wringing the cushions, which can damage their shape and internal filling.

The final and most critical step is ensuring the cushions dry completely. Stand them on their edges and place them in direct sunlight. The sun's UV rays are excellent for killing mold spores and freshening fabrics. Flip them periodically to dry all sides. This may take a full day or two. Never put cushions away until they are bone-dry.

To prevent the smell from returning, store cushions in a cool, dry place over winter. Use a breathable storage bag or container and consider adding moisture-absorbing products like silica gel packets. With these methods, your patio cushions will be fresh and ready for the season.
