Common Problems and Effective Solutions for Urban Outdoor Furniture

How do I clean mildew from my fabric outdoor furniture cushions?

Discovering mildew on your fabric outdoor furniture cushions is a common but fixable problem. Mildew thrives in damp, shaded environments. To tackle it effectively, first take the cushions outside on a sunny, dry day. Brush off any loose spores with a stiff brush. For a natural solution, mix equal parts white vinegar and water in a spray bottle. Generously apply it to the mildew stains and let it sit for at least an hour. Then, scrub the area with a soft-bristled brush and rinse thoroughly with a hose. Allow the cushions to dry completely in direct sunlight, which also helps kill remaining spores. For tougher stains, you can use a solution of one cup bleach diluted in a gallon of water, but test it on a hidden area first as bleach can damage some fabrics. Alternatively, a commercial mildew remover designed for outdoor fabrics is a reliable option. Always follow the product instructions. To prevent future mildew growth, store cushions in a dry place when not in use, use protective covers, and clean them periodically. Ensuring they dry completely after rain is key to keeping them fresh and mold-free.
