Common Problems and Effective Solutions for Urban Outdoor Furniture

How do I remove rust stains from my metal outdoor furniture?

Seeing rust stains on your metal outdoor furniture can be disappointing, but don't worry—you can often restore it with simple household items. Here are effective DIY methods to remove rust.

For light surface rust, create a paste using baking soda and water or lemon juice. Apply it thickly to the stained area, let it sit for at least an hour, and then scrub with a stiff-bristled brush or an old toothbrush. Rinse thoroughly with water.

For more stubborn rust, white vinegar is a powerful ally. Soak paper towels in white vinegar and lay them directly onto the rust stains. Let them sit for several hours or overnight, keeping the towels moist. The acetic acid in the vinegar will dissolve the rust. After soaking, scrub the area vigorously. For heavy rust, you may use a mixture of salt and lemon juice, applying it similarly and letting it sit before scrubbing.

After removing the rust, always rinse the metal piece completely with clean water and dry it with a towel to prevent immediate re-rusting. To protect your furniture for the future, consider applying a coat of automotive wax or a specialized metal sealant once the surface is completely clean and dry. Regular cleaning and keeping furniture covered during harsh weather are the best ways to prevent rust from forming again.
