First, assess the damage. Clean the scratched area thoroughly with mild soap and water to remove dirt and grease. For shallow surface scratches that haven't penetrated to the metal, you might only need a simple solution. Sometimes, gently rubbing the scratch with a clean, soft cloth and a small amount of automotive paste wax can minimize its appearance by filling the shallow groove.
For deeper scratches that expose the underlying metal, a touch-up is necessary to prevent rust. Start by lightly sanding the immediate area with very fine-grit sandpaper (like 600-grit) to smooth any rough edges. Wipe away all dust with a tack cloth. You will need a matching touch-up paint.
