Common Problems and Effective Solutions for Urban Outdoor Furniture

Can I use a power washer to clean my outdoor furniture, or will that damage it?

Using a power washer to clean outdoor furniture can be effective but risky. The high-pressure water stream is powerful enough to strip paint, splinter wood, tear delicate wicker or rattan, and force moisture into cushions or joints, leading to mold and rust. Whether it's safe depends entirely on your furniture's material and the washer's pressure settings.

For durable materials like solid metal (wrought iron, aluminum) or sturdy plastic, a power washer can be used cautiously. Always use the widest, lowest-pressure nozzle (often a 40-degree white tip), maintain a distance of at least 12-18 inches, and keep the spray moving. Never aim directly at seams, cushions, or decorative details.

However, for softer woods (like pine), all-weather wicker, rattan, or painted furniture, avoid the power washer. The pressure can cause irreversible damage. Instead, opt for a gentle cleaning with a garden hose, mild soap, and a soft brush.

Best practice? Start with the gentlest method. Mix warm water with a few drops of dish soap or a dedicated patio cleaner. Scrub with a soft-bristle brush and rinse thoroughly with a garden hose on a "shower" setting. This is often sufficient for most dirt and mildew. Reserve the power washer only for the toughest, most durable pieces, and always test on an inconspicuous area first. Proper care extends your furniture's life and keeps your outdoor space welcoming.
