Common Problems and Effective Solutions for Urban Outdoor Furniture

I'm worried about my outdoor furniture blowing over in the wind, any tips?

Strong winds can turn your beautiful outdoor furniture into dangerous projectiles or cause costly damage. Fortunately, with some simple preventative measures, you can keep your patio set secure and intact.

Start by assessing the weight and construction of your furniture. Heavy, solid wood or metal pieces are naturally more resistant. For lighter weight furniture, like aluminum or resin chairs, you need to create additional stability.

Anchoring is one of the most effective strategies. For standalone pieces like pergolas or large umbrellas, use ground anchors or augers. You can strap the furniture leg to the anchor sunk into the soil. For furniture on a wooden deck, consider using plastic cable ties or durable straps to secure chairs and tables to sturdy deck railings.

Adding weight is another excellent solution. Fill the base of a market umbrella with a weighted stand or sandbags. For a glass-top table, simply ensure the glass is heavy enough; if not, place weight bags or decorative concrete blocks inside the table's base. You can also purchase specially designed furniture weights that strap onto chair and table legs.

When severe weather is forecast, the safest option is to store furniture indoors. A garage, shed, or even a basement is ideal. If you lack space, simply laying furniture flat on the ground drastically reduces its wind profile and prevents it from being tipped over and blown away. Stacking chairs and turning tables upside down can also help.

For a permanent solution, consider investing in furniture designed for wind resistance, with features like breathable mesh that allows wind to pass through. Regular maintenance, like tightening bolts and checking straps, ensures your security measures remain effective.

By anchoring, weighting, or storing your furniture, you can enjoy your outdoor space without worrying about the next gust of wind. A little preparation saves you from the hassle and expense of replacing damaged pieces.
