Mildew on outdoor furniture cushions is a common problem, especially in humid climates. It not only looks unsightly but can also damage the fabric and cause unpleasant odors. Fortunately, cleaning it effectively is straightforward with the right approach. First, remove the cushions from the furniture and take them to a well-ventilated area, preferably outdoors. Brush off any loose dirt or debris. For a simple and effective cleaning solution, mix one part white vinegar with one part water in a spray bottle. Alternatively, you can use a mixture of two tablespoons of baking soda with one quart of warm water. For tougher mildew, a solution of one cup of bleach mixed with one gallon of water can be highly effective, but test it on a small, hidden area first to ensure it doesn't discolor the fabric. Spray the chosen solution generously onto the mildewed areas. Let it sit for 10-15 minutes to penetrate and break down the mildew. Then, using a soft-bristled brush, scrub the fabric in a circular motion. Pay extra attention to heavily stained spots. After scrubbing, rinse the cushions thoroughly with a garden hose or clean water. It is crucial to remove all the cleaning solution residue. To dry, stand the cushions on their edges in direct sunlight. Sunlight is a natural mildew killer and will help eliminate any remaining spores. Ensure the cushions are completely dry before storing or placing them back on the furniture to prevent mildew from returning. To prevent future mildew growth, store cushions in a dry, well-ventilated place when not in use, especially during rainy or humid seasons. Using protective, waterproof covers can also provide an excellent barrier against moisture. Regular cleaning and prompt drying after rain are key to keeping your outdoor cushions fresh and mildew-free for many seasons.
