Common Problems and Effective Solutions for Urban Outdoor Furniture

My metal outdoor furniture is starting to rust; can it be repaired or should I replace it?

Discovering rust on your metal outdoor furniture can be disappointing, but it doesn't necessarily mean you need to replace it. The good news is that most rusted metal furniture can be successfully repaired and restored to its former glory, saving you money and reducing waste.

For minor surface rust, the repair process is straightforward. Start by thoroughly cleaning the furniture with soap and water, then use a wire brush or sandpaper to remove all loose rust. For more extensive rust, you might need a chemical rust remover. After removing the rust, apply a rust-inhibiting primer specifically designed for metal surfaces. Finish with outdoor-rated spray paint or enamel paint that matches your furniture's original color.

The decision to repair or replace depends on several factors. If the rust has created structural weaknesses or holes in the metal, replacement might be your best option. However, if the frame remains solid despite surface rust, repair is not only possible but recommended. Regular maintenance, including proper cleaning and storage during harsh weather, can prevent future rust issues and extend your furniture's lifespan for years to come.
