Discovering sticky tree sap on your beautiful wood outdoor furniture can be frustrating. This stubborn substance seems to bond permanently with the wood's surface. Fortunately, you can remove it safely using common household items without damaging the finish.
Start by hardening the sap. Place a few ice cubes in a plastic bag and hold it against the sap for a few minutes. Once the sap is brittle, gently scrape it off with a plastic spatula or a credit card, being careful not to gouge the wood.
For any remaining residue, isopropyl rubbing alcohol is highly effective. Dampen a clean, soft cloth with the alcohol and gently dab at the sticky spot. The sap should begin to dissolve. Wipe the area clean and follow up with a damp cloth to remove any alcohol residue. For a gentler approach, create a paste from baking soda and a few drops of water. Apply it to the sap, let it sit for a minute, and then scrub gently with a soft-bristled brush before wiping clean.
A solution of equal parts white vinegar and water can also work. Spray it on, let it sit for five minutes, then wipe. For finished or sealed wood, a small amount of mayonnaise or olive oil can break down the sap. Apply, wait an hour, and wipe away.
Once the sap is gone, clean the entire piece with a mild soap and water solution. Finally, applying a fresh coat of sealant or wood protector will help guard against future sap incidents and keep your furniture looking its best for seasons to come.
