Birds perching on your outdoor furniture can be frustrating, leaving behind droppings that damage surfaces and create cleanup chores. Fortunately, several humane and effective methods can discourage this behavior without harming the birds.
One simple approach is using visual deterrents. Hang reflective objects like old CDs, wind chimes, or special reflective tape near the furniture. The movement and flashes of light disorient and scare birds away. You can also place realistic fake predators, such as plastic owls or snakes, on or near the chairs. Remember to move these decoys regularly so birds don't become accustomed to them.
Physical barriers are another excellent solution. Install anti-roosting spike strips on the backs and arms of your chairs and sofas. These spikes are blunt and won't hurt the birds but make the surface uncomfortable for perching. You can also cover the furniture with lightweight netting or a fitted cover when not in use.
Applying tactile or scent-based repellents can also work. Special non-toxic bird repellent gels create a sticky surface that birds dislike. You can also try natural repellents like peppermint or citrus essential oils; birds tend to avoid these strong scents. Reapply these after rain.
For a long-term strategy, consider modifying the environment. Remove nearby food sources like open trash cans or bird feeders. Planting certain species that birds avoid, like marigolds, might also help direct them away from your seating area. By consistently using a combination of these methods, you can enjoy your outdoor space without unwelcome feathered guests.
