Metal outdoor furniture is durable and stylish, but exposure to the elements can cause it to rust. Don't throw it away! With some simple tools and effort, you can restore it yourself. Here is a step-by-step guide.
First, assess the damage. For light, surface rust, the process is straightforward. For severe rust with holes, repair may be more complex.
You will need: safety glasses, gloves, a wire brush, sandpaper (medium and fine grit), a drop cloth, a tack cloth, rust converter or primer, outdoor metal paint, and clear sealant (optional).
Step 1: Preparation. Work in a well-ventilated area. Lay down a drop cloth. Put on your safety glasses and gloves.
Step 2: Remove Loose Rust. Use the wire brush to scrub away all loose, flaky rust. Be thorough, scraping and brushing all affected areas. For intricate designs, use a smaller brush or steel wool.
Step 3: Sand the Surface. Use medium-grit sandpaper to smooth the surface and eliminate any remaining rust spots. Feather the edges around the rusted areas to blend them with the sound metal. Then, use fine-grit sandpaper to create a smooth surface for painting. Wipe away all dust with a tack cloth.
Step 4: Apply Rust Converter or Primer. If you used a rust converter, apply it as directed, usually by brushing it on. It will turn the remaining rust into a stable, black surface. If you are using a primer, apply a coat of rust-inhibiting primer specifically made for metal. This prevents rust from recurring. Let it dry completely according to the product instructions.
Step 5: Paint the Furniture. Choose a paint designed for outdoor metal. Spray paint often gives the most even finish. Apply two or three thin coats, allowing proper drying time between each coat. Hold the can about 10 inches away and use sweeping motions to avoid drips.
Step 6: Apply a Protective Sealant (Optional). For extra protection against rain and sun, apply a clear, weather-resistant sealant over the dry paint.
Step 7: Maintenance. To prevent future rust, clean your furniture regularly and apply a fresh coat of wax or sealant once a year. Store it indoors or use protective covers during harsh weather.
By following these steps, you can fix rusty metal furniture, save money, and enjoy your outdoor space for many more seasons.
