Common Problems and Effective Solutions for Urban Outdoor Furniture

Can I leave my outdoor furniture outside all winter, or should I store it?

Whether you can leave your outdoor furniture outside all winter depends heavily on the material it's made from and your local climate. Harsh winter conditions like snow, ice, rain, and freezing temperatures can cause significant damage. Prolonged exposure can lead to rust on metal frames, cracking and splintering in wood, fading and brittleness in plastics, and mold growth on cushions.

For long-term durability, storing your furniture is the best option. Clean it thoroughly and store it in a dry, covered space like a garage, shed, or basement. If storage isn't possible, high-quality, durable covers are essential. Look for breathable, waterproof covers that are securely fastened to prevent moisture buildup and wind damage. Some modern all-weather materials, like certain powders-coated aluminum, teak wood, or high-density synthetic resins, are better suited to withstand the elements with minimal protection. However, even these will benefit from being covered. Leaving furniture unprotected often leads to a shortened lifespan, requiring costly replacements. Taking the time to store or cover your furniture is a simple step that will ensure it looks great and is ready for use when spring arrives.
