The frequency for treating teak outdoor furniture is a topic of much discussion. For many owners, the best approach is surprisingly minimal. High-quality teak contains natural oils that protect it from the elements, and it will naturally weather to a beautiful silvery-gray patina without any treatment at all. If you wish to maintain the original golden-brown color, you can apply a specialized teak sealer or protector. These products are designed to shield the wood from UV rays and slow the graying process, typically needing reapplication once or twice a year, depending on your climate and sun exposure. Using traditional teak oil is generally not recommended by many experts for furniture kept outdoors. Oil does not nourish the wood—teak is already oily—and can actually create a sticky surface that attracts mold, mildew, and dirt. It often leads to a blackening or peeling finish, requiring more frequent and intensive maintenance. Therefore, for most situations, the ideal treatment is simply regular cleaning with a soft brush, mild soap, and water. If you choose to use a sealer to preserve the color, a semi-annual application is sufficient. Otherwise, you can confidently let your teak furniture age gracefully into its signature silver-gray hue with very little intervention.
