Common Problems and Effective Solutions for Urban Outdoor Furniture

We have a lot of windy days; what kind of outdoor furniture won't blow away?

Living in a windy area can turn your patio into a chaos zone, with lightweight chairs and tables becoming dangerous projectiles. The key to a serene and safe outdoor space is selecting furniture designed to withstand the gusts.

The most fundamental principle is weight. Opt for materials that are inherently heavy and sturdy. Solid wood, like teak or eucalyptus, cast aluminum, and concrete-topped tables provide a solid base that wind will struggle to lift. Wrought iron furniture is another excellent, weighty option for wind resistance.

Beyond the material, the design is crucial. Look for low-profile furniture with a low center of gravity. Chaise lounges and high-backed chairs are more susceptible to catching the wind like a sail. Instead, choose sleek, ground-hugging benches and deep, enclosed seating. Furniture with slatted designs, rather than solid panels, allows wind to pass through, significantly reducing the risk of it tipping over.

For tables, a single, substantial pedestal base is far more stable than a design with four thin legs, which can be easily rocked and toppled by strong gusts.

Your furniture's stability can be dramatically improved with simple anchoring solutions. Many market umbrellas and standing heaters come with weighted bases that you can fill with sand or water. For furniture sets, consider commercial anchor kits that securely tether your pieces to the patio or deck. For a DIY approach, you can use durable straps or even discreetly secure pieces to a sturdy railing with weather-resistant rope.

When not in use, always employ storage strategies. Use sturdy, waterproof covers that fit snugly; a loose cover can act as a parachute. For lightweight accessories like cushions, have a dedicated storage bench where they can be safely stowed away during a storm. For ultimate peace of mind, have a plan to quickly move smaller, lighter items indoors when severe weather is forecasted.

By focusing on heavy materials, stable designs, and proactive anchoring, you can create a beautiful outdoor living area that remains intact and inviting, no matter how hard the wind blows.
