Discovering sticky tree sap on your beautiful wooden outdoor furniture can be frustrating. Fortunately, you can remove it safely using common household items without damaging the wood's finish.
Start by hardening the sap. Place a few ice cubes in a plastic bag and hold it against the sap for a minute or two. Once the sap is brittle, gently scrape it off with a plastic scraper or a dull butter knife. Be careful not to gouge the wood.
For any remaining residue, rubbing alcohol (isopropyl alcohol) is highly effective. Dampen a clean, soft cloth with the alcohol and gently blot the sticky spot. The sap should dissolve and transfer onto the cloth. Wipe the area clean with a damp cloth afterwards.
If you prefer a gentler method, try a paste of baking soda and water. Apply the paste to the sap, let it sit for a few minutes, and then scrub gently with a soft-bristled brush. Alternatively, a small amount of creamy peanut butter or mayonnaise can break down the sap due to their oil content. Apply, let it sit for an hour, and then wipe away.
For a thorough clean after the sap is gone, wash the entire piece with a mixture of mild dish soap and warm water. Finally, reapplying a protective sealant or wood oil will help guard against future sap stains and keep your furniture looking its best.
