Common Problems and Effective Solutions for Urban Outdoor Furniture

How do I get rid of rust spots on my metal outdoor furniture?

Metal outdoor furniture is durable and stylish, but it can fall victim to rust over time, especially when exposed to rain and humidity. Fortunately, you can remove rust spots and restore your furniture with some simple methods and household items.

First, assess the damage. Surface rust can often be treated with DIY solutions, while severe pitting may require more intensive methods or professional help.

For light surface rust, create a paste using baking soda and water or white vinegar. Apply the paste to the rusted areas and let it sit for a few hours. Then, scrub gently with a wire brush or steel wool. Rinse thoroughly with water and dry the furniture completely.

For more stubborn rust, a commercial rust remover is highly effective. Always wear gloves and eye protection. Apply the product as directed, usually by brushing it on, letting it sit, and then scrubbing the rust away. Rinse and dry the furniture meticulously afterward.

Once the rust is gone, it's crucial to prevent its return. Apply a metal primer to the cleaned areas, followed by a fresh coat of outdoor-rated paint or a clear protective sealant. This creates a barrier against moisture.

To maintain your furniture, clean it regularly with mild soap and water, and keep it covered during harsh weather or store it indoors during winter months. Addressing small rust spots promptly will keep your metal furniture looking great for years to come.
